The new technology in the Air Max Dn8 keeps the original 1986 Air Max concept more alive than ever: experimenting with air and creating new tools to enhance performance—while also elevating aesthetics and even culture. One of the defining characteristics of the Air Max lineage is its ability to become an icon.
Dn8: Dynamic Air at Its Max
The Air Max Dn8 takes the idea of Dynamic Air (previously introduced in the Dn) to the entire midsole, optimizing airflow with every step. Its design features two Air units and eight tubes that generate a continuous, pressurized flow from heel to toe, delivering unparalleled cushioning and a dynamic sense of movement.
To fully grasp this innovation, we have to go back to the early ’90s, when Nike began fine-tuning air pressure within Air units based on function and placement. Areas requiring greater stability used higher pressures. For years, the markings PS5, PS20, and PS25 on the outsole of the Air Max 95 were a mystery to many.
By 2024, Nike took this a step further with Dynamic Air technology, allowing air to flow between different chambers. Initially applied only to the heel, it now extends to the forefoot as well.
Pressure: The Key to the Dn8
The Air Max Dn8 revives pressure-based cushioning through a system of two pressurized chambers, each housing two tubes. The chambers are strategically designed: the two rear tubes feature higher pressure (103 kPa) to absorb impact, while the two front tubes have lower pressure (34 kPa) to maximize propulsion. With every step, air moves freely between the tubes in each chamber. The forefoot Air unit follows the same principle, with air transitioning from the lower-pressure rear tubes (34 kPa) to the higher-pressure front tubes (103 kPa).
This innovative system of eight interconnected tubes achieves optimal cushioning with every stride and serves as the foundation of the Dn8. According to Nike designer Jonathan Kosenick, the goal was to bring the shoe closer to the ground, leading to an outsole redesign that mirrors the structure of the Dn8 units. The upper combines next-generation materials, high-density woven fabrics, and TPU to provide breathability and protection—all while maintaining the bold aesthetic that has always defined the Air Max legacy.
