Vans Vault, the California skate brand’s premium division dedicated to the confluence of urban art, music and trends, teams up with artist Julian Klincewicz in a collaboration that draws inspiration from his idyllic childhood summers in Union Pier, Michigan.
Julian Klincewicz doesn’t stop. The multidisciplinary artist based in San Diego, California, is well known for his ability to make celebrities like Beyoncé or Kanye West “accessible”, as well as for his collaborations with designers and brands like Gosha Rubchinskiy, YEEZY, Acne Studios or Calvin Klein, among others.
An ability to find moments of great beauty and intimacy in everyday situations and translate them into a fresh visual style, lo-fi and VHS aesthetics, which fits perfectly with the timeless spirit of Vans.
Vans Vault x Julian Klincewicz is a collection of footwear and apparel designed hand in hand with the artist, inspired by the summers he spent with his family in Union Pier, Michigan.
EXPERIENCES THAT LEAVE A LIFE-LONG MARK
Bike rides to the ice cream shop, soccer games in the sun, swimming in Lake Michigan, bonfire nights and meteor showers… Moments etched in Klincewicz’s life that have served to shape a multidimensional collection, meant to be worn to the point of wear and tear, giving each silhouette and garment a unique look and character.
Five iterations of two classic Vans silhouettes – the OG Style 31 LX and the OG Authentic SP LX – and several items of clothing that pay homage to the summer season, and whose design is influenced by the concept of time: how can an object gain value as it deteriorates? How can experience change our perception?
All the items in the collection have been conceived with the idea of what Julian Klincewicz would have liked to wear at the time. Comfortable, simple and functional garments. Sneakers that you wear for the first time in May and end up full of holes -and all kinds of experiences- in September. T-shirts that change color after being worn over and over again.
“PURE MICHIGAN”, THE PRESENTATION OF THE COLLECTION IN MILAN
On the occasion of the launch of the collection, Vans organized an event in the form of an exhibition that took place in Milan on May 10, and we didn’t want to miss it.
Thus, the Spazio Maiocchi in the Lombard capital became a beach surrounded by images of the collection and its lookbook. In addition, Julian Klincewicz himself attended and played a video recorded especially for the occasion, which served to make us participants for a few hours of his experiences and feelings of the summers of his childhood.
