Aritz Aranburu and Garazi Sánchez, two hosts who had a lot to teach us about the sea, were the hosts of Terra Project Season III in Zarautz, a legendary location in the surfing community.

Through the Terra Project, an initiative of FOOTDISTRICT and Nike ACG, they invite us to engage with nature and relate to our environment differently. We have seen mountains and skies in previous seasons; this time, Terra Project invited us to dive into the ocean and learn about sea culture.

A weekend of activities and interaction in the surroundings of a traditional farmhouse in Zarautz was enjoyed by 17 participants from various backgrounds, ages, and interests. Ocean52 ambassadors Aritz Aranburu, a European surfing legend, and Garazi Sánchez, a Spanish champion and European surfing runner-up, hosted the event. They not only welcomed them among the waves, but they also had the opportunity to display their personal projects. Aritz presented Kind Surf, an initiative that brings the sea closer to children at risk of social exclusion and shared with them his travels and experiences on the professional surfing circuit and as an adventurer in remote places. Garazi discussed his films Shame, a critical examination of the state of the oceans, and Removing Shame, an invitation to discover new ways to enhance our relationship with the sea.

The Terra Project participants learned about the work of Mater Museoa, an inshore fishing boat with a traditional design that has been turned into a functioning museum. The participants, organized into groups, attempted to locate, pick out, and remove the trash that had been dumped by humans.

Once they were on dry land, they went to Albaola, a maritime factory that develops experimental navigations and recovers artisanal maritime technologies.

Learning about the sea’s codes and cultures invites us to become aware of our role, because awareness is the first step toward change. The participants, now working as a team, left Zarautz with the intention of taking their knowledge to other coasts. The Nike ACG collection is available at FOOTDISTRICT
