When it comes to retro runners, Nike’s Zoom Vomero 5 seemed an unlikely contender to return to store shelves in the current market – and even less likely to be adorning this page as our pick for sneaker of the week – but here it is taking out this week’s top honours.
The Vomero 5 is here to stay.
Making its debut in 2010, the fifth entry in the Vomero series was a strict performance runner that went unnoticed by almost all (so-called) sneakerheads on its original release. That all changed, however, when the team at A-COLD-WALL* decided to resurrect the brawny pavement pounder in late 2018 with a touch of street-savvy sophistication. ACW* reinterpreted the model with a monochromatic makeover and equipped it with an almost comically large heel counter that made it almost impossible to ignore.
This week, the Zoom Vomero 5 returned once again in three new colourways, with collab credentials removed, but ended up catching our attention for a completely different reason: the first of these three new make-ups is impossible to ignore – literally! It features a blinding ‘Volt’ upper that emits some serious Air Ghost Racer-level radiance and makes for a shoe that is guaranteed to snap necks, especially with its complementing hot pink pops.
Equally praise-worth, but a little less extreme, is the second and final coloured instalment of the trio: a tasty ‘Racer Blue’ combo furnished with hits of zesty orange.
Finally, Nike have completes this winning trifecta with a tidy black and white combo that showcases the raw beauty of the silhouette itself.
It’s rare that a retro will improve on an original, but Nike’s newest batch of Zoom Vomero 5 SPs are just that.
