Nike’s early mesh and suede runners have been attracting a whole lot of attention lately. The Air Tailwind made its long-awaited retro return earlier this year – managing to snag a number of enviable Stranger Things collaborations in the process. Even more impressive still, the original Moon Shoe just set a new record for the most expensive sneaker at auction, changing hands for just shy of €400k! Bringing up the rear is our pick for sneaker of the week, a reinterpretation of the past with a taste of the future, the Nike Daybreak x Undercover.

Undercover mastermind Jun Takahashi has carved a reputation through his many Nike collaborations by reimagining the brand’s latest running footwear and apparel with a dose of slick streetwear inspiration. Last year, Takahashi delivered one of the best collab collections of 2018 with his take on the ultra-cushy React Element 87. This year, however, he has broken from tradition by venturing deep into archives to revive a classic running silhouette from 1979 with the same concentration on street-focused style, giving birth to the Nike Daybreak x Undercover.
Takahashi’s revived Daybreak preserves much of what made the OG so beloved, including its sultry curves and palatable combination of suede and mesh. There’s no mistaking these for a pair of OGs though, thanks to the aggressive heel ornamentation hugging the rear. Additional details, including Undercover branding on the midsoles and a sprinkling of speckle, perfectly update the original design with just the right amount of modern styling.
This week brings us three new colourways of the Undercover Daybreak and they are definitely some of the best. In complement to the new Daybreak’s aggressive design, Takahashi has embraced a copious amount of red and yellow to make sure these are as in-your-face as humanly possible. Better still for female sneakerheads, two of these have been made specifically with the ladies in mind, so there’s plenty of small sizes on deck.
The Nike Daybreak x Undercover is available right now, while stocks last. Head to the Foot District online store now to secure your pair. Limited allocations are also available through our Madrid and Barcelona locations.
