Ever since we launched our Sneaker of the Week column back in March, a wide range of brands, silhouettes and styles have garnered our praise. From classic retros to daring new designs, we’ve truly seen an eclectic mix of footwear thrust into the spotlight. Now, to be clear, that’s not because the Yeezys lately have been bad, they’ve just not managed to hog the limelight. Thankfully, that all changes this week with the release of Ye’s latest output, the adidas Yeezy Boost 700 ‘Utility Black’.

The Yeezy Boost 700 arrived on the scene in 2017, disrupting the onslaught of 350 v2s that made up almost all of Ye’s footwear output in the year prior. While we loved – and still love – the 350 in all its many forms, the sense of freshness that the model once possessed had begun to dissipate with each subsequent release. The 700 was, thankfully, completely contrary to the 350 in almost every way. Where the 350 was sleek and slim, the 700 was bulky and expansive. It was just the shake-up the Yeezy line needed.
Since it’s debut, the Yeezy Boost 700 has been treated to a number of different colourways – and even its own v2 derivative – but the original ‘Wave Runner’ release has always stood out clearly as the best 700 to date. After two years, though, we finally have a worthy challenger in this week’s ‘Utility Black’ release. The new take on the 700, retains its original v1 form, but opts for a sleek black-on-black appearance. In fact, apart from always-welcome gum outsoles, there’s no pops of colour to be found. Instead this take on the 700 is all about materials. Buttery suede, supple leather and breezy mesh come together to bring us the best material-medley on the 700 yet.
