Sebago’s story began when Daniel J. Wellehan, the owner of five Maine shoe stores, wanted to meet the growing demand for high-quality footwear. Together with two local shoemakers, William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau, they founded Sebago-Moc, a brand inspired by the classic moccasin design and the nearby Sebago lake. The name “Sebago” means “elongated water basin” in the Abenaki language, a nod to the brand’s Maine roots.
The brand’s first creation, the classic Sebago Penny Loafer, remains a symbol of timeless style. Hand-sewn with impeccable craftsmanship, it is still made the same way today, more than 70 years later, representing Sebago’s enduring commitment to quality.

The Docksides, introduced in the 1970s, marked a significant turning point in Sebago’s evolution.
