In its latest collection, New Era dives into the expressive world of Japanese multidisciplinary artist Takashi Murakami. A collaboration where American headwear brand’s caps, accessories and apparel are filled with multicolored flowers and characters from an anime that brings contemporary art closer to street style.
Rather than a contemporary artist, Japanese Takashi Murakami is a visionary, a creator in every respect who, tired of the elitist art scene of Japan in the 90s, developed the Superflat movement: an aesthetic approach to otaku culture, pop art and traditional Japanese art.
Superflat was born with the aim of showing the, in his words, superficial Japanese society what art is on a global scale and, at the same time, to bring the essence of Japan’s artistic tradition to the West. A microuniverse full of flowers and anime and manga characters that has transcended art to settle in disciplines such as fashion, advertising or animation.
ART TO WEAR ON YOUR HEAD o ART AS HEADWEAR
After delving into Murakami’s work, the collaboration between the artist and the headwear and apparel brand seems natural, fluid and organic. Not only does New Era produce some of the world’s most famous and highest quality headwear, but they regularly partner with renowned artists, major entertainment franchises and fashion brands to elevate the already iconic headwear.

New Era x Takashi Murakami is a collection in which the characteristic flowers that fill Murakami’s work, and characters like Mr. Dodo -the artist’s own alter ego- are splashed and embellish each of the 16 items that make up the collection.
Streetwear, anime, flat colors, flat-top caps, otaku culture and much more is what you’ll find in the latest collaboration between New Era and Japanese multidisciplinary artist Takashi Murakami. Available now at FOOTDISTRICT.
