Here at Foot District, we are dedicated to bringing you the very best in streetwear. In order to achieve this goal, we are forever scouring the Earth in search of new labels to add to our inventory. There are two key criteria we look to when weighing up a brand’s merits: originality and quality. Thankfully, we recently found one that overwhelmingly delivered on both in United Standard. The fledgling label will be making its Foot District debut in the coming months, so we figured we’d take a moment to give you the lowdown on man behind the brand and the surprisingly technical clothing he creates.
United Standard – FW19
United Standard is the work of renowned Italian designer Giorgio Di Salvo, who established the streetwear brand in Milan in 2015. He described it as a merger of aesthetics and functionality – one that highly valued practical concerns, while still giving strong consideration to an item’s overall aesthetic beauty. Ever since the reveal of the brand’s first collection, which dropped ahead of FW 2015, Di Salvo has proven he is more than capable of achieving just that. Now that the brand has a few collections under its belt, United Standard has really begun to shine bright and garner the exposure it deserves. The brand’s first official show, which went down at the start of the year, drew particular media attention for the inclusion of items created in collaboration with Off-White founder Virgil Abloh.
United Standard – FW19
At last month’s Paris Fashion Week, United Standard took to the runway to showcase the brand’s newest creations as part of their SS 2020 collection. The upcoming assortment, which will be available at Foot District in the not-too-distant future, was inspired by Di Salvo’s exploration into facial recognition software and the algorithms that power it. Sure, that doesn’t sound like your standard source of streetwear inspiration, but, then again, Di Salvo is not your standard designer. The resulting collection leans heavy into experimentation – including the first apparel use of a specialised high-tech Kevlar-type mesh created by i-Mesh, as well as a brand new breathable, super light silver material created in collaboration with Majocchi. The collection’s designs embrace military innovation, while delivering looks that are inspired dominated early Nineties raver culture – a scene that was itself known for embracing technical apparel and footwear for aesthetic effect.
United Standard SS20
Giorgio Di Salvo may be somewhat new to the fashion world, but his freshness is ultimately one of his greatest strengths. Under his label United Standard, he is responsible for some of the most experimental designs in the current streetwear market, and we are excited to be able to share them with you all very soon. Stay tuned for updates!
