
It very likely will not come up in casual sneaker head conversation. In fact, there aren’t too many discussions in general where the Gel-Mai would come about, but that might not be such a bad thing. Being a fan of shoes often means having an appreciation for what might go unheralded or unnoticed by many others.
The ASICS Gel-Mai was originally dropped back in the early 90’s, presented as a relatively lightweight alternative to the heavier and bulkier mainstays at the time. This time was also when running and marathons were gaining in popularity, demanding more of sneaker brands. Though mostly standard in its features, the Gel-Mai’s support system was interesting. Using interlocking loops, it reminds us of Nike’s younger Flywire set up.
It won’t be a sneaker that everyone you pass will notice, but we don’t really need anyone to notice, do we?
