Historically, it’s difficult to overstate the contributions that running sneakers have made to sneaker design as a whole. Some of the most iconic shapes you can think of – Air Max 90, New Balance 997, Asics Gel Lyte III – were born out of the need to answer a question of practically, but become something more.
The Gel-DS is one of Asics’s numerous examples of this. Originally, this model was dropped in 1995 to meet the several needs of long distance runners. Thus, it’s built with very distinct characteristics in mind: fit, durability, and cushion. A leather and textile upper is kept together by underlying support details, beneath which is the signature Gel midsole. The durable leather outsole flexes and adjusts to repeated foot strikes along high mileage treks. Now, it returns as a reminder of sneaker style in the 90’s: never subtle, always practical.
