For all the BMX stars out there: Air Jordan 1 Hi OG NRG Nigel Sylvester
We finally see a long time AJ 1 fan collab for his own release, culminating into the Air Jordan 1 Hi OG NRG Nigel Sylvester. Sylvester, the famous shoe’s namesake, has likely been eyeing this collab for quite some time now.
He’s been a Nike athlete since 2005. For better than a decade, Sylvester has been responsible for helping the brand’s 6.0 branch of action sportswear flourish. His BMX career has led to a reputation for being maybe the only pro rider to still pedal around in Air Jordan 1’s.
Sylvester has been doing that for as long as he can remember, gathering all sorts of scuffs on shoes you’d be spending a small fortune on. Just like the skaters and riders in the 80s subculture scene, Sylvester is just in love with these shoes.
As such, it’s about time the man was awarded an opportunity to put out his own vision of this model. To say the very least, it’s a memorable aesthetic.
The color scheme here centers around Sail White with contrasting notes of Black and Varsity Red. The leather construction here is “pre-distressed” to look like it’s been beaten up and put through the rough treatment of a BMX star. For an additional piece of detail, we also get mini-swoosh stitching along the toe area.
The distressed or “pre-distressed” notion of sneaker design is hardly new. Premium brands have been wading around in this genre for a while. Still, the fact that this shoe was put together by a skater makes it seem a bit more sincere. It’s also worth keeping in mind that each pair is individually hand distressed, so there’s an organic sense of variety.
