Let’s get into context: the year is 1984, Van Halen has just released its sixth studio album, the Challenger shuttle has been in space for 11 days and Apple has released its first computer in history, the Macintosh 128K. A convulsive era also in aesthetic terms, when acetate sunglasses, retro-style tennis shoes with embroidered US flags or brands such as Kangol were worn by punks, rappers and yuppies alike.
A year in which two companies created, each in its own sector, iconic products that at the time they could not have known they were destined to meet. We are talking about the Japanese motor factory Kawasaki and its famous Ninja GPZ900R model; and adidas, the German brand of the three stripes, and its famous RX 8000.
Almost 40 years later, both legends converge in two very special silhouettes: the adidas x Kawasaki ZX 8000 and the adidas x Kawasaki ZX 5K Boost.
Two sneakers to feel the wind in your face
adidas borrows from Kawasaki the concepts of speed, evolution and progress to pay tribute to the legacy of the Japanese brand through its two iconic silhouettes. Thus, the leather and synthetic upper of the adidas x Kawasaki ZX 8000 stands out for its colorway, which combines white, blue and lime green, and for the large “Ninja” that decorates the entire side.
The adidas x Kawasaki ZX 5K Boost keeps the spirit of the powerful motorcycles it is inspired by, adding the German brand’s revolutionary Boost technology to the midsole of the shoe, improving cushioning and shock absorption in every step. Also constructed in leather and synthetic material, the black color predominates, but the lime green details and the small graphic on the toe cap remind us of where its design comes from. Innovation and speed in equal parts.
