In the 1980’s, sneakers were looking at a considerable evolution. Running shoes were starting to turn away from a tradition bit of form thanks to some ingenuity by Blue Ribbon Sports, or what we now know as Nike. With sleeker frames, lighter bases, and premium material mixes, the industry was put on notice. Adidas would eventually respond in kind, and the New York model was a direct result of this.
When we think of foundational Three Stripes models, it’s easy to simply refer to the Superstar, Stan Smith, Gazelle, or other court models. But, the brand’s prevalence on the track is equally worthy of note. The New York met an industry wide standard through the use of a mesh upper overlaying it with suede. As successful as they were in meeting the functional demand, it was the stylistic ideal that made the adidas New York so remarkable, doing an impressive job of representing the sneaker aesthetic of the 1980’s.
In a more basic, fundamental way, the New York was a beast of a sneaker both on and off the track. Find the adidas New York now at our store.
