Autry was founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1982 with the firm intention of carving out a niche for itself in the complex world of tennis shoes. Its innovations in terms of design and its timeless styling, which included the American flag embroidered on the side of all its models, helped to ensure the brand’s growing popularity.
FROM REIGNING ON THE COURTS TO CONQUERING THE STREETS
In 1985, the highly respected journal Tennis Magazine referred to its Medallist silhouette as the “best tennis shoe on the market” and, two years later, Runner’s World gave their Jetstreamer shoe five stars, positioning Autry as the leading brand in the running shoe market. And, as is often the case, that was just the beginning.
Soon, the clean and fresh look of the “trainers with the American flag” hit the streets and were soon the firm favourite of millions. So much so that they became fashion and style icons, transcending their original function – sports gear to play tennis in – and even featuring in hit movies such as The Breakfast Club and Stand by Me.
FALL AND RISE OF A LEGEND
That’s how Autry became North America’s best-selling brand of sneakers; everybody wanted to wear those white trainers with the America flag so they could be as cool as the actors and actresses of the day. It seemed the fever would go on for ever – until the early 90s that is, when production ground to a halt.
But then, in 2019, Autry rose from the ashes, determined to come back stronger than ever before.
