Nevertheless, it hasn\u2019t always been that way. The union between adidas and Run-DMC established a milestone in history, becoming the first sponsorship of a musical group from a sports brand.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66399\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.footdistrict.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/magefan\/footdistrict-run-dmc-adidas-union-historica-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"Kareem\" width=\"1000\" height=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When Run-DMC released their first song in the year \u201883, the adidas Superstar was a basketball sneaker from 1970 that competed against the Converse All Star to lead the court. The truth is that <b>the Superstars<\/b>, as we know them today, are born from the <b>Supergrip<\/b> model. Created around 1965, which are supposed to be adidas\u2019 first basketball shoes. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Everything changed when <b>Run-DMC revolutionized the whole scene by openly declaring their loyalty to the Superstars<\/b> through a song: \u201cMy Adidas\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66400\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.footdistrict.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/magefan\/footdistrict-run-dmc-adidas-union-historica-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"adidas\" width=\"1000\" height=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hit was created in response to a poem from a doctor living in their neighborhood. <b>Dr. Deas<\/b>, who worked at the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens, <b>was tired of the violence <\/b>he had to witness everyday, and that\u2019s why he decided to reflect it in <b>a poem<\/b>. In it, <b>he<\/b> <b>criminalized sneakers<\/b> in general, specially the ones without laces \u2013\u2013as a reference to the prisoners\u2013\u2013, the black Lee jeans, the Cazal sunglasses and chains.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The poem called \u201c<b>Felon Sneakers\u201d<\/b> ended up becoming a rap song. Exactly a year after, <b>Run-DMC<\/b> released the song <b>\u201cMy Adidas\u201d<\/b> in protest. <b>The goal was to vindicate<\/b> that the adidas were a form of expression and that they had a positive connotation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>My a-didas!<\/h5>\n<p>So the absolute hit \u201cMy Adidas\u201d quickly attracted the company\u2019s attention. <b>Its sells increased considerably<\/b> without any apparent reason \u2013\u2013 or that they at least knew about. <i>\u201cAdidas had a guy in Los Angeles named Angelo Anastasio. He was current with the pop and the rock, the club scene and the athletes and the designers\u2026\u201d, remembers DMC. \u201cOne day someone asked him if he had heard this Run-DMC, to what he answered \u2018Huh, what the hell is a Run-DMC and rap music, huh?\u2019 When he listened to it he understood what we had done\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66401\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.footdistrict.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/magefan\/footdistrict-run-dmc-adidas-union-historica-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"RUN-DMC\" width=\"1000\" height=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Angelo Anastasio left Los Angeles to fly to New York to go to the <b>show that Run-DMC was doing at Madison Square Garden. <\/b>There, Darryl DMC McDaniels asked his fans to take out their sneakers and to hold them up. <b>As a result, almost 40.000 people took them off their feet and \u201cMy Adidas\u201d started to play.<\/b> When Anastasio came back to LA and told what he had seen and felt, his superiors sent him to Germany to speak with <b>the Dassler family<\/b>, the owners of the brand.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, both the Dasslers as the adidas\u2019 managers made a decision that would leave a mark in history: <b>to sponsor Run-DMC.<\/b> Besides this millionaire contract, they also designed a clothing line with the group\u2019s logo and the adidas Superstar.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66402\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.footdistrict.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/magefan\/footdistrict-run-dmc-adidas-union-historica-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"adidas Superstar\" width=\"1000\" height=\"660\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, on the occasion of the <b>Superstars\u2019 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary<\/b>, adidas decided to release a <b>limited edition of the Superstar DMC<\/b> in honor of the group.
