The pairs were made on demand and according to specific customer orders, so there was no need to devise a stockpile to protect the goods. Some time later, new manufacturing processes arrived and mass production was born. And so the first cardboard boxes were introduced. A single brown lid, with a merely functional and somewhat flimsy design. Things would get better years later. But for sure nobody expected what it ended up being.

After their birth as a receptacle for shoe-keeping in warehouses, shoe boxes began to evolve in design throughout the 20th century. At the beginning of this period, the concept of the shoe began to change from a practical object to a fashion item. The boxes began to incorporate logos, colors and distinctive illustrations of each brand or shoemaker. From here to the present there is a great leap and a process of changes that would mark a parade of aesthetic movements, great advances in quality and new markets. Among them, the sneakers boom and its incursion in our life as something more than simple sneakers. The sneakerhead phenomenon has caused many sportswear brands to take another step forward in their production by creating special models, limited editions, exclusive collaborations and, of course, surprising shoe boxes to protect each one of these treasures. In Foot District we have compiled our six favourites, and it hasn’t been easy!

Top #6 Sneakers Box

Nike SB Blazer Premium Fly Milk (2007)

The Nike SB Blazer Premium ‘Fly Milk’ is a tribute to Jeff and the Fly Skateshop that he opened in Shanghai after his previous work in a milk processing factory. A special edition of the iconic Blazer whose box simulated a milk brick, with a missing person’s ad printed on the carton. The colours white and blue are the same as those used on milk cartons in China, and the sneaker has the characters that mean “milk” in the heel area. These Nike were designed by Matt Irving, who is also responsible for the SB Hunter Dunk.

Nike Air Force 1 Supreme Low – Year of the Rabbit (2011)

Nike launched an Air Force 1 Supreme Low limited edition to celebrate the Chinese New Year in 2011, the Year of the Rabbit. Inspired by Changai’s creamy White Rabbit candy, the shoe featured a white leather upper with platinum suede panels and a milky-toned midsole. Touches of red and blue completed the design, as well as the Chinese character of the rabbit. The cover of this candy was not far behind. The edition came in an appetizing white packaging that simulated an unopened candy.

Nike Air Max – Scholz & Friends Pack (2013)

In an attempt to reimagine the design of the legendary Air Max box, Nike chose the Berlin agency Schloz & Friends. Thus was born the Nike Air Max – Scholz & Friends pack, a packaging that inserted the sneakers inside an air-filled plastic cushion that referred to the Air unit. A very practical feature: the cushioning protected the shoe even during shipping.

adidas Originals NMD Pitch Black – Urban Utility Pack (2016)

The adidas NMD have been one of the biggest highlights of the trefoil. The silhouette had its most premium version with the adidas Originals NMD Pitch Black – Urban Utility Pack, a limited release of only 500 pairs worldwide. It was a luxury pack with the sneakers inside a Rimowa suitcase accompanied by useful travel items from other brands such as Oral-B or Porter-Yoshida & Co. A curious fact: 100 of these pairs were given away in a draw via Snapchat.

Vans Pro Classics 50th Anniversary Collection Authentic Pro (2016)

Vans celebrated its 50th anniversary with the special edition Vans Pro Classics 50th Anniversary Collection Authentic Pro. Some of the brand’s most iconic models were updated in an exclusive launch that arrived in a very original wooden box. The packaging opened to reveal a skateboard ramp with a mini-board and laser engravings.

Nike Mercurial Superfly Fire & Ice (2017)

In 2017, Nike created a collection of football boots in an exclusive edition. The Nike Mercurial Superfly Fire & Ice came in a surprising packaging that invited you to choose between two sides: fire or ice. You’ve probably never seen unboxing like this.

Before the 19th century, shoe production was totally different.
