The term \u2018grail\u2019 is constantly thrown around in the sneaker scene to refer to the sneakers a person wants most. Often that implies some heavily hyped collaboration that\u2019s mass-produced in the thousands, but the reality is that a grail is something far more special. Like the Holy Grail itself, a grail-worthy sneaker must be nigh on impossible to find. It is a shoe that is so exclusive and elusive that you can\u2019t simply log on to StockX with money to burn and find at least one pair for sale \u2013\u00a0irrespective of how ludicrous the asking price may be!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alexander McQueen x Nike Air Max 90 SL Laser<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In an effort to reclaim the meaning of word \u2018grail\u2019, we\u2019ve decided to start showcasing some true hidden sneaker gems \u2013\u00a0the kinds that even Indiana Jones would struggle to find! To kick things off, we\u2019re taking a look at one of the rarest Nike<\/a><\/strong> Air Max 90s in existence, a little-seen collaboration with Alexander McQueen<\/p>\n

If this is your first time hearing of an AM90 from the late British fashion designer, then you are not alone. Few had even heard of this sneaker\u2019s existence before the footwear historians at Archive.DNA<\/a> shared them with the world earlier this week.<\/p>\n

As the story goes, this intricately detailed AM90 was originally commissioned by McQueen, as a one-of-one for his own private collection. They came bundled with a matching leather backpack and biker jacket, both made of leather. The shoes were designed by Tom Luedecke at Nike\u2019s acclaimed Innovation Kitchen. They were then cobbled, stitched and assembled by a team of just three. While it isn\u2019t clear exactly when this particular pair was constructed, it seems likely that they were made in the mid 2000s, when Mark Smith and Co. introduced laser engraving technology into the sneaker market.<\/p>\n

The shoes themselves are made of duchess black satin, using one-piece construction. The uppers were then engraved using a powerful laser to sear the signature AM90 design elements into the upper, along with other extensive details to meet McQueen\u2019s tastes. As if they weren\u2019t special enough, the shoes, which are a US10, came housed inside a specially constructed, hand-stitched suede box.<\/p>\n

These uber-exclusive Air Max 90s were later sold by auction at a private American Express Black Card event, where they ultimately made it into private hands.<\/p>\n
