While all three are, without a doubt, some of the most influential aerosol artists of all time, today we’ve decided to turn our focus local and highlight one of Spain’s very own street art stars: the extremely talented Felipe Pantone.

Felipe Pantone Early Days

Felipe’s story begins on the other side of the globe in South America. He was born in Argentina’s capital of Buenos Aires in 1986, but it wasn’t long before he and his family made the move to the southeast of Spain, when Felipe was just 10 years old. In 1998, at the age of 12, Felipe dipped his toes into the world of underground art in Torrevieja. He went by the handle ‘Pant1’ at first, before later trimming it down to just ‘Pant’. At the age of 18, he made the move to Valencia, where he remains to this day.

In his early years in Valencia he painted as part of the D.O.C.S crew, before later becoming a prominent member of the UltraBoyz. When he wasn’t out painting on the streets, Felipe honed his skills in traditional painting at university with a Fine Art degree. Due to the repetitious nature of the degree, Felipe considered the practical side of his studies a ‘waste of time’, but ultimately found himself inspired by art history. It taught him that he would truly need awareness and knowledge of what’s already been done in the past in order to contribute something creatively new to the world.

Prim & Proper Vandal

As part of the UltraBoyz, Felipe developed a widespread reputation for his subversion of graffiti convention. Sick of seeing his work continually buffed, often erased in only a matter of days – or even hours – in prominent locations, Felipe switched up his style to be in line with conventional beauty standards. He painted a store’s roller shutter, as he had done many times before, but this time with the phrase ‘You don’t wanna buff this, do you?’ in a cursive calligraphy-style font. This little experiment paid off. Instead of being buffed the very next day, as Felipe had encountered with this particular shutter in the past, the store’s owner allowed it to remain. Felipe was confident that the store’s owner didn’t understand the actual meaning behind the phrase, which was written in English, but deduced that the universally accepted beauty of the writing itself was a way to ensure his mark remained around the city.

Felipe followed up the success of his experiment by writing the phrase ‘Politically Correct’ – and other sly jabs like ‘Bloody Graffiti’ – around Valencia in equally appeasing cursive construction. To the non-English speaking Spanish public, ignorant to the messages contained, they were seen as beautiful works, but to Felipe each was still just a ‘dirty fat cap tag’. The longevity of these works out on the streets, coupled with the fact that they were so at odds with graffiti convention, caused Felipe’s profile to grow – not only in Spain, but also around the world.

Digital Distortion

Although Felipe has been showcasing his work in galleries as far back as 2006, it has only been in the last few years that he has truly fine-tuned the striking style for which he is best known today. The style, which has been described as ‘existing at the intersection of Blade Runner and Photoshop’, is digital distortion at its most alluring. Setting foot in one of his exhibitions can seem akin to booting a corrupted computer program at first glance. Lo-fi effects like pixelation, commonly considered roadblocks that stand in the way of aesthetic perfection, are championed in Felipe’s work and transformed into unexpected examples of beauty. His work is signified by dynamic compositions of geometric elements and the use of vivid colour to create eye-catching optical art.

Felipe Pantone’s acclaimed style is the result of 21 years of experimentation. What began as a battle to stand out on the streets has resulted in his work easily stealing the show in galleries around the world. Today, Felipe is far more than just a street artist. His work is the culmination of graffiti, installation and design, and it is some of the most striking and exciting in the art scene right now.

Keep it up, Felipe, you’re doing Spain proud!

Keep up to date with Felipe’s latest work via his Instagram account: @felipepantone

In recent weeks, here on the Foot District blog, we’ve dived deep into the legacies of graffiti greats KAWS, Banksy and Futura.
