Now, in 2019, the radical design celebrates its 25th anniversary and, surprisingly, remains as jaw-dropping as ever. The Instapump Fury was born from the imagination of Steven Smith, a veteran footwear designer responsible for some of the most iconic silhouettes in all of sneaker history. Steven’s credits range from classic New Balance models like the 996 and 1500, right up to highly confidential work on the very latest Yeezys in production, but it is the Instapump Fury that remains arguably his most striking design. Ahead of the Instapump Fury’s long-awaited retro return in OG colours, we caught up with Steven to discuss the legacy of Reebok’s laceless bladder-based runner.

We interviewed Steven Smith about the history of the Instapump Fury

Matt Williams (M.W.) – The Instapump Fury is such a unique sneaker, even to this day. What did the higher-ups say when you first presented the design?

Steven Smith (S.S.) – Paul Fireman loved the shoe, because it was like nothing that anyone had seen before. When it was shown to the lower levels of the inline team there was a cooler reception, because they really didn’t understand it.

M.W. – You’ve designed iconic sneakers for almost every major brand in existence, though the Instapump Fury is seen today as so quintessentially Reebok. Do you think that such a bold design could have made it into production at any other brand?

S.S. – I don’t think so. It took a leap of faith by Paul Fireman and his desire for the new that drove us to explore outside sporting goods. We looked to aerospace and biomedical equipment suppliers to make such a radical sneaker.

M.W. – With its laceless bladder upper and split midsole, the Instapump Fury seems about as far from a performance runner as you can get. How much thought was given to the performance aspect in its creation?

S.S. – It was actually completely driven by performance. We wanted to remove as much unnecessary material as possible and lighten what was already there. I wanted it to be a machine for running, not just a sneaker.

M.W. – Well, you truly proved that laces were entirely unnecessary in finding a snug fit. Why do you think that exclusively bladder-based sneakers never really took off beyond the Instapump line?

S.S. – The intent was for improved fit and comfort. It was a new concept to remove all the foam and stuff that normally takes up all the slop in the fit of a typical running shoe. I think the technology really defined the aesthetic, and the aesthetic wasn’t for everyone. Also, the naysayers eventually default to conservatism and the crutch of tradition.

Instapump Fury as a fashion icon

M.W. – The Instapump Fury certainly wasn’t for the faint hearted! Its blazing OG ‘Citron’ colourway was almost as eye catching as the model itself, and unlike most anything else from Reebok at the time. Where did the inspiration for the colourway come from?

S.S. – It was a combination of the spirit of the Sex Pistols’ album art and attitude, combined with the fire-graphic colour sequence from the New Balance Super Comp – a shoe that I always wanted as a teenager.

M.W. – The Instapump Fury became an unlikely high-fashion icon, especially when they appeared on the Chanel runway. Sneakers and high fashion are commonplace nowadays, but the Instapump was a pioneer in its day. Why do you think it gained such praise in the upper echelons of the fashion industry at the time?

S.S. – It was never intended as that, but I’m sure its futuristic appearance had quite a bit to do with it. It looked like something designed by aliens from the future. It also, in a weird way, referenced high heels with its two-part bottom unit.

M.W. – All but the most diehard ‘bok fans are probably unaware, but there were actually two different versions of the original Instapump Fury from the mid 90s. Why did Reebok decide to change up the design?

S.S. – It was part of the usual transfer from ‘Innovation’ project to ‘Seasonal’. The Seasonal team felt they needed to ‘freshen’ it up. It was also a bit of a control issue, in that they didn’t have a say in the original design and the transition was a chance for them to put their stamp on it.

M.W. – Something that most sneakerheads probably forget is the Instapump inflator, which was an external device that used canisters of high pressure gas to achieve the perfect fit in an instant. Do you think we will ever see these return?

S.S. – The inflator was really cool. It was driven by a vision of Paul Fireman. I’m not sure, with the current state of liability and nanny-state mindset, that the compressed canisters would make sense in the current market. I noticed that the modern Fury releases have ribs, so it wouldn’t even fit to them.

M.W. – The Instapump Fury was hardly your first sneaker design, and it certainly wasn’t your last! While many are aware of your classic creations, like the New Balance 1500 and the Nike Zoom Streak Spectrum, you’re still working as hard as ever on new designs. What sneakers have you worked on in recent years?

S.S. – Oh, there have been quite a few! Some of them I can mention, but there are a number I can’t talk about. I worked on the Air Max 2009 and quite a few of Nike Japan’s projects. I also worked on the ‘Hello Kitty’ Prestos. After I left Nike, I went on to do some wearable sport electronics and soft-circuit apparel at Adidas.

M.W. – Speaking of wearable electronics, there are plenty of new sneaker innovations hitting the market lately. Is there a particular tech or material you are keen to work with?

S.S. – I’m not sure. I like to find the new. adidas’ 4D technology seems like it would be pretty interesting to explore.

M.W. – Lastly, what’s next in the pipeline for Steven Smith?

S.S – It’s a secret. Stay tuned!

The Reebok Instapump Fury OG ‘Citron’ releases at Foot District this Friday, April 5.
