Style savant \u2013 and Chanel creative director \u2013 Karl Lagerfeld passed away at the ripe old age of 85. Although Lagerfeld will be best remembered for his influence in haute couture and high fashion, his effect on the sneaker world was perhaps equally as profound.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Karl was responsible for connecting sneakers and haute couture<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64855 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.footdistrict.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/magefan\/reebok-instapump-fury-channel-karl-lagerfeld-2000.jpg\" alt=\"Instapump Fury x Channel (Karl Lagerfeld)- 2000 \" width=\"960\" height=\"570\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the year 2000, when the worlds of sportswear and high fashion were purposefully segregated, Lagerfeld disrupted the status quo by sending models down the runaway in Chanel-branded <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/en\/reebok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reebok<\/a><\/strong> InstaPumps. It was an unexpected move from the man who infamously claimed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/en\/pants\/\">sweatpants<\/a><\/strong> to be a sign the weaver had lost control of their lives, but his co-sign served to acknowledge that sneakers had well and truly transcended beyond mere performance-focused footwear \u2013 especially when it came to Steven Smith\u2019s avant-garde InstaPump.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the Chanel x Reebok InstaPumps would never hit retail \u2013 remaining unicorns amongst Reebok fanatics \u2013 but their very conception would serve to kickstart a new wave of thinking in the sneaker industry, one that has only gained mainstream traction in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64002\" src=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/media\/magefan_blog\/7A4B0BFB-15D0-4EC5-B82D-CFF223E12036.jpeg\" alt=\"Nike Air Max 90 x Off-White\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>Off-White x Nike Air Max 90<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Following Lagerfeld\u2019s surprise Pump debut, high fashion would attempt to penetrate the lucrative sneaker-focused <a href=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/en\/clothes\/\"><strong>streetwear<\/strong><\/a> market to varying degrees of success, with Kanye\u2019s assortment of Louis Vuitton collaborations in the late 2000s one of the definite highlights. While attractive and well made, <a href=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/en\/upcoming-releases\"><strong>sneakers releases<\/strong><\/a> by the high fashion giants always seemed to be playing catch up with contemporary sneaker trends.<\/p>\n<h3>Chanel&#8217;s Reebok Instapump were a before and after in the connection between fashion and streetwear<\/h3>\n<p>Fortunately, in recent years, high fashion has begun to play to its strengths. It is now the sportswear manufacturers that are playing catch up, inviting the most forward-thinking designers from the world of high fashion to reinvent the sneakers for the masses. From the likes of Alexander Wang and Yohji Yamamoto over at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/adidas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adidas<\/a><\/strong> to Jerry Lorenzo and Virgil Abloh at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/nike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nike<\/a><\/strong>, sportswear giants are dropping their focus on performance to accept sneakers of all shapes and sizes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63997\" src=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/media\/magefan_blog\/A475B89F-9E55-4B55-AF29-7F614187D1B4.jpeg\" alt=\"adidas x Alexander Wang\" width=\"1200\" height=\"765\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>adidas by Alexander Wang AW Reissue Run<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While Lagerfeld is no longer with us, his influence on sneakers will long be felt.\u00a0His InstaPumps remain unicorns, but that didn\u2019t stop him from experimenting with sneakers right until the very end. One of his last contributions was a <a href=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/en\/vans\/\"><strong>Vans<\/strong><\/a> capsule collection that only slightly altered classics like the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/footdistrict.com\/en\/sneakers\/f\/b\/vans\/zm\/vans-sk8-hi\/\">Sk8-Hi<\/a><\/strong> and Slip-On, proving that, for decades, sneakers have just been one degree away from high fashion.
