This shoe is undoubtedly a reaction to the current trend favoring deconstructed sneakers. The likes of Virgil Abloh have effectively created a bit of a gold rush when it comes to this style.

The React Element 87 is a combination of a few footwear trends, actually. Sure, the concept of stripping a shoe down to its bare functional essentials is clear here. But, there’s also a note of chunkiness on this model.

When it was originally released, this shoe was a collaborative drop between the Swoosh and Undercover’s Jun Takahashi. Though Nike had already been more or less leading 2018 collab rankings with their Off-White work, this was the brand’s way of covering their flank as well.

Nike React: one step too close to being the shoe of the year

Beyond that, they ended up stumbling onto a potential Shoe of The Year. Even if you don’t quite get the bulk and deconstruction fad, it’s hard to deny this sneaker’s status in the wider community – it’s got plenty of folks in and out of the industry buzzing!

The uppers on these models are nearly translucent in their finishes. Both the Black and White iteration feature in a base that looks as though the shoe was turned inside out. Other details in that light include taping towards the heel, a leather and suede lacing setup, and criss-cross exposed stitch patterns throughout.

The midsole, sporting the latest in Nike’s cushion technology in React foam, gives the vibe of some bulk. With that being said, a low Swoosh and sharp finish towards the forefoot make sure this shoe isn’t without streamlined qualities as well.

It’s something of a moderate answer to two trends that are ripping through the footwear industry. Both colorways are available now.

Deconstruction vibes with the Nike React Element 87 The Nike React Element 87 really ought to get more credit for how appropriate its name is.
