<\/a><\/p>\nThe Nike Air Max Plus isn’t all that different from other Air Max runners, at its core. But, far from homogenizing it, that very fact is what makes it so remarkable. It feels like every Air Max model comes with a movie-worthy storyline. For the Nike Air Max Plus, it all starts on the beaches of Florida.<\/p>\n
The shoe’s original designer, Sean McDowell, has been an outdoors kind of kid his whole life. Whether he’s sitting around sketching on the picturesque Florida beaches or going for a run, being outside came naturally to him.<\/p>\n
One day, McDowell, happened to be sketching for a bit while taking in some more sea breeze. Coincidentally, it was starting to turn to dusk and the normally light blue Floridian sky was darkening into the evening. Adding even more visual stimulation was the effect of the wind on palm trees as the breeze picked up the pace.<\/p>\n
Of course, McDowell, who hadn’t even started working with Nike yet at this point, is hit with inspiration and begins to sketch down a design. Now, to the rest of us, what McDowell saw was merely the stuff of a quality postcard.<\/p>\n
To the imaginative Nike designer, though, it was both the visual and functional basis of a groundbreaking runner. The sky’s fading effect would inspire the use of the gradient upper, the first in the Nike Air Max line to attempt the look.<\/p>\n
The accompanying vegetation also sparked his design. As McDowell put it, “[it was] like you could hold your foot down with those palm trees.” From just another day lounging and drawing on the beach came the basis for one of the most memorable runners ever.<\/p>\n
Typical of a talented designer to turn the largely mundane into something you could touch and feel. The Nike Air Max Plus became a matter of destiny for McDowell as he began his work with Nike back in 1997.<\/p>\n
His first challenge was to create a running shoe that used Nike’s then newest cushioning development, Sky Air. Similar to what we see on the Air Max 95, Sky Air was an approach that segmented the cushion into separate hemispheres.<\/p>\n
More importantly, the name just gave McDowell even more urgency to get this design out. The Nike Air Max Plus became all the talented designer could think of, drawing up concept after concept and employing much of Nike’s latest in tech.<\/p>\n
The upper’s gradient look was a challenge. Something that was approached with innovative molding techniques. The shoe’s midfoot shank was inspired by the imagery of a whale tail coming out of the water.<\/p>\n
Even its reflective panels were an industry first, covering both the heel and forefoot areas. And, of course, the palm tree look – a support element that was the result of triple-welding techniques – was all over the place. The shoe that would come to be known as the Nike Air Max Plus, or the Air Max Tn, would be released in 1998.<\/p>\n
So, how in the world do you top that? What exactly do you add to a shoe that was knocking it out of the proverbial park from the very beginning? For Nike, it all comes down to employing arguably their most famous new piece of tech.<\/p>\n
This time around, Nike Sportswear Designer Dylan Raasch leads the creative effort. If you ask him, predecessors such as McDowell had done all of the hard work already.<\/p>\n
As Raasch sees it, many of the concepts that have become staples in runner designs were initially brought about via the Nike Air Max Plus.<\/p>\n

So, the latest contribution to this timeless look is the VaporMax cushioning, which is about as visually stunning as it is technically sound. The result is the Nike Air VaporMax Plus, and it’s a visual wonder. The shoe’s upper stays true to its original but manages to carry an even bolder aesthetic thanks to the VaporMax cushioning.<\/p>\n
The Nike Air VaporMax Plus absolutely benefits from the gaudy look of the Vapor bubbles. One thing that often gets lost on us as sneaker fans is that the shoe was made to be a performance model.<\/p>\n
After all, the Air Max Plus was put together by a running fan who just happened to like beaches. The Nike Air VaporMax Plus reflects a logical evolution of this by throwing the original build – which, by the way, still boasts some relevant functionality – onto its latest cushioning tech.<\/p>\n
Choosing between the Nike Air Max Plus vs Nike Air VaporMax Plus becomes even more difficult when you realize the value of the design’s past and its present.<\/p>\n
Honestly, we’re sorry we even mentioned it. But, unfortunately, we find it much too easy to geek out over these things – never let the sneaker nerds run the sneaker store!<\/p>\n
