The evolution of eyewear comes to us in multiple slivers and slashes, meandering back forth between extremes.

Occasionally, this particular realm of fashion accessory finds itself coasting along the lines of a medium. From bold extravagance to muted sophistication and everything in between, eyewear design has a habit of turning all stones. Somewhere in that fray, a brand like SUPER by Retrosuperfuture finds its way to iconic status.

Super by Retrosuperfuture: creativity meets ambition

To understand how a small company got to where it is today, it’s important to track its roots. By even the most conservative definition, Daniel Beckerman’s mind is fully loaded with creativity. Even more apparent is the SUPER founder’s ambition and drive.

A longtime designer, Beckerman had gotten the idea for his eyewear brand from a host of inspirations. Primarily, though, it was all about filling a niche that mirrored his personal taste. After all, it’s hard to create a product for a consumer you can’t relate to.

Beckerman notices two things. First, many of the major players in fashion are trying their hand at just about everything except sunglasses.

Second, even the brands that were looking in that direction, they very rarely released memorable sunglass options. Equally important is noting the context within which all of this is made apparent.

Towards the end of 2006, industry analysts had made largely the same prediction for the future of eyewear: consumers were going to need exciting colors and designs to be swayed.

In fact, that demand was going to make itself known within a year. Thus, 2007 becomes both a jumping off point for imaginative eyewear design and the birth year of SUPER in Italy.

From this point on, the brand goes on to release a slew of iconic designs. Models such as the Ciccio and Flat-Top create the sort of buzz that money can’t always buy.

Along the way, SUPER earns the organic endorsements of titans such as Beyonce, Kanye West, Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, and Lady Gaga – the list, somehow, actually goes on.

Along the way, Beckerman surrounds himself with a very specific sort of creative team. Each member brings a unique take on eyewear, designing based on what they would like to see in a pair of quality sunglasses.

Italian quality and consumer-led design. Heck of a formula, that.
