To understand that one needs to understand a bit of fabric production. Before the 1950s most fabrics, including denim, were made in old shuttle looms. The name \u201cselvedge\u201d relates to the \u201cself-edge\u201d which basically means the fabric comes out of the loom with a clean finished edge.
