Michael Jordan<\/strong> never distanced himself from the legacy of North Carolina. From the UNC shorts he wore under his uniform to the blue and white version of the Jordan 1,<\/strong> his college years continued to shape his identity\u2014on and off the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jordan\u2019s time at North Carolina<\/strong> defined his path forever. It wasn\u2019t just where Mike became Michael\u2014it was where his playing style took form. So much so, that he always wanted to carry a part of his alma mater with him<\/a>. He held on to memories, yes, but also did so physically: during his early seasons with the Bulls, he wore UNC shorts under his uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story of the first time Michael saw the prototype of his Jordan<\/a> signature shoes is well known. A nervous Nike, still betting its future on a young player, presented him their first draft. Jordan wasn\u2019t impressed. Something was missing\u2014something essential to him: the Carolina blue and white. The light tones stood in stark contrast to the black and red of the Bulls, and that colored his first reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n

The first three Jordan 1 colorways<\/a> were all rooted in Bulls tones\u2014white, black, and red. But among the original 1985 designs, Nike also included a UNC version<\/a> as a nod to Jordan\u2019s college roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That Air Jordan 1 UNC<\/a><\/strong> edition has returned occasionally over the years, but it was Virgil Abloh who reignited its emotional and visual impact. He did so at the 2018 Met Gala\u2014just two months before his reinterpretation was released to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
