Sport and fashion, when considered together, have had some of their most memorable moments in Paris.

Fashion, sport, Paris

Considered the “father of the new Olympism”, Pierre Fredy de Coubertin was born in Paris and, although some of his ideas about sport were influenced by a movement developing in the United Kingdom, the Games always had Paris as one of his favorite places. The Games first left Greece in 1900 for Paris, which served as host again 24 years later. Paris, along with London (and beginning in 2028, Los Angeles), are the only venues to have hosted three Games.

Paris’ relationship with fashion, which some attribute to Louis XIV, the Sun King’s taste for elegance, has evolved with names such as Marie-Antoinette, the creation of luxury as we know it today with Worth and Patou, and the establishment of the Haute Couture label. The establishment of Paris as a world fashion capital, just at the time when sport was taking on a new meaning, facilitated the relationship between the two; Jean Patou designed for his haute couture house while creating uniforms for tennis star Suzanne Lenglen, inaugurating a trend that would be followed by Elsa Schiaparelli (who created a special skirt for another tennis player, Lilí Álvarez), Emilio Pucci (who became an Olympian in 1932) and Ottavio Missoni, who devised his brand during London 1948, where he participated in the 400-meter hurdles.

In the relationship between fashion, sport and Paris, we analyze some of the moments that have defined a style.

Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaiian style in Paris 1924

Duke Kahanamoku competed in his final Olympic Games in Paris in 1924. He had already competed in 1912 and 1920 as a swimmer and waterpolo player, and in 1924 he finished second in the 100 m freestyle behind Johnny Weissmüller (later known as Tarzan’s interpreter). Duke is a member of the Swimming Hall of Fame, but his most significant impact was in surfing. Born in Honolulu, he popularised surfing first in the United States and then around the world.
