Because Stockholm (Surfboard) Club is both designed and Scandinavian, but it is not Scandinavian design. There are no pure lines, neutral colors, or minimalism, but this rejection is the result of evolution rather than an anti-Scandinavian design proposal. color, graphics, kitsch, and even humour are concepts in motion; a destination reached by chance, a path discovered only after walking it.

Stockholm (Surfboard) Club’s lines, according to brand founder Manne Glad, have a direct connection to vintage surfing, though he is motivated more by his ideas than his lines. His unusual patterns would appear out of place in a vintage setting.

Surfboard learnings

The references to workwear in Stockholm (Surfboard) Club’s essentials are not meant to glorify the past, but to honour Manne Glad’s past (and present). Carpenter and son of a carpenter, his relationship with (Surfboard)s has two sides, as a surfer on the board and as a shaper around it. Because Glad learned to design by creating (Surfboard)s and it was (Surfboard)s that led him to other aspects of design. In a functional sense, because the job of designing boards entails a theoretical and practical knowledge of shapes and fluid behavior that Glad interprets in his own way at Stockholm (Surfboard) Club. Shaper’s (Surfboard) work also familiarizes him with a process of trial-and-error and craftsmanship that can also be seen in the brand.

But there is also another direct link between surfing and design. It was in the context of surfing that Manne Glad met Jonny Johansson, another surfing enthusiast who in 1998 had founded, together with three colleagues, Acne Studio. More than a brand, Acne was born with the intention of presenting new creative proposals. In fact, Acne is an acronym for Ambition to Create Novel Expressions. Although Johansson was born in Umea, northeastern Sweden, Acne’s headquarters were in Stockholm.

United by Acne

United by their passion for surfing, Manne Glad worked at Acne where he met Anton Edberg, the other founder of Stockholm (Surfboard) Club. The idea of the brand emerges as a hub for the creativity that surrounds surfing (even if it is not always tied to it), the garments are born to accompany that creative impulse and the community that forms it. Glad (Creative Director) and Edberg (CEO) maintain Stockholm (Surfboard) Club as a community concept, not only as a main idea, the production and manufacture of garments must follow patterns of respect for workers, materials and sustainability. A task that begins in the same design process, in which they try to flee from trends and that has become one of its hallmarks.

Psychedelia, unusual patterns, unexpected colors, humor, design, workwear and different cultures associated with surfing, as a source of inspiration for Stockholm (Surfboard) Club.
