FOOTDISTRICT Madrid Steps into the Nike x One Piece Universe

The collaboration between Nike and One Piece connects with a community that has spent years following every detail of the story. To accompany the launch, we transformed FOOTDISTRICT Madrid into a space for discovery inspired by the universe of the collection.

An Experience Created for One Piece Fans

When a collaboration draws from a universe as instantly recognisable as One Piece, the product tells only part of the story.

Nike brings the world of one of the most influential manga franchises to a collection of footwear and apparel inspired by its characters, references and most recognisable elements. The collection stands on its own, while revealing additional details to those who know the universe from the inside.

In Europe, the collection has reached only six selected stores. FOOTDISTRICT is one of them. And we wanted to create something special for the occasion.

Our connection with such a specific community led us to approach the launch differently. To access the opportunity to purchase the Nike Air Max Plus “Ope Ope”, participants had to put their One Piece knowledge to the test. We created a quiz specifically for the occasion, giving those who understood everything behind the collection a chance to prove it.

FOOTDISTRICT Madrid as a Nike x One Piece Laboratory

The community response confirmed that this collaboration had a story worth telling beyond the product.

We transformed the entrance of FOOTDISTRICT Madrid into a laboratory inspired by Nike’s vision, creating a space where research, innovation and the stories of the characters come together.

The space invites visitors to discover the creative process behind the collaboration and turns the visit into an interactive experience. Each element acts as another clue within the narrative, connecting the design of the sneakers with the One Piece universe and the energy of the Ope Ope no Mi.

The objective was simple: we wanted those coming to collect their pair to find more than a box. For a few minutes, they could step into the universe behind the collaboration.

The response exceeded our expectations. From the very beginning, the space sparked the curiosity of those who visited the store. People stopped to discover every detail, share the experience and, of course, search for references they recognised from the One Piece universe. Seeing the community’s enthusiasm around the installation was probably one of the most rewarding parts of the entire launch.

We also wanted the experience to leave participants with something tangible. We created three posters inspired by the collection, available as prizes through our slot machine.

Thank you to everyone who took part, visited the store, put their One Piece knowledge to the test and shared the experience with us. And thank you to everyone who made it possible for FOOTDISTRICT Madrid to become, for a few days, a small gateway into this universe.

Space Jam: The story behind the sneakers and the Jordan Dome

Before becoming a cult classic, Space Jam was a strange project even by Michael Jordan’s standards: a movie with Bugs Bunny, a shoot built around green screens, and a basketball court built specifically so he could train while filming. Along the way came the Air Jordan 9, the Jordan 11, and a good number of stories that help explain why the film remains such an important part of pop culture.

When Michael Jordan found out he was going to work with Bugs Bunny

David Falk, Michael Jordan’s agent since the beginning of his career, usually avoided giving away too much information about his negotiations until they were well underway. But this was different, very different from most of the campaigns he worked on with Jordan. So he decided to tell Michael about the possibility of making a movie with Bugs Bunny.

For Jordan, working with Bugs Bunny sounded so strange that he chose not to believe his agent. “When we’re on set, I’ll believe it.”

It wasn’t the first time a movie had been discussed, but with Michael’s fiercely competitive mindset, it only made sense if it was something big enough. And the project with Warner Bros. ticked every box. It was designed to become one of the biggest films of its time, not only because of the innovations required to bring animated characters to the screen, but also because of the merchandising universe it could create.

By 1995, Michael had already appeared in so many advertising shoots that you could say he had spent more hours in front of cameras than some actors. However, he wasn’t particularly comfortable playing someone else. That’s why one of the conditions for making the leap to the big screen was simple: Michael Jordan had to play himself.

From Nike Commercials to the Big Screen

Appearances by major basketball stars in movies had previously been occasional and unexpected. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had played a pilot in Airplane!; Patrick Ewing appeared as the Angel of Death in The Exorcist III; and Marques Johnson had a nearly anonymous, partially masked role in White Men Can’t Jump.

With Blue Chips, Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway seemed to be moving towards something different: leading roles, something that had previously only been seen in the cult classic The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh, starring Julius Erving and Meadowlark Lemon.

David Falk’s proposal went much further. It was based on something that already worked: Nike campaigns in which Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny had shared the screen to promote the Air Jordan 7 and Air Jordan 8. The idea was to turn that formula into a full-length movie.

For the project, Falk brought in Joe Pytka, a director who had built his career during the 1980s working on Michael Jackson music videos and commercials featuring Madonna. He could also claim to have already directed Jordan and Bugs Bunny together in those commercials.

For someone without formal acting training, the shoot was a considerable challenge. Much of the film would be shot against a green screen, with Bugs and the other animated characters, including their enemies, added later.

A Shoot set against Jordan’s NBA comeback

The movie began at a particularly complicated moment. During pre-production, Michael announced his retirement from basketball and his intention to play professional baseball. Soon after, with part of the script already developed, he returned to the NBA.

The difficulties weren’t limited to the script. Jordan was back with the Bulls, but things didn’t go quite as planned.

One of the first problems was his number. The 23 had been retired in his honour, so he had to return wearing 45. What looked like it was destined to be a triumphant comeback became one of the few setbacks of his career.

Although his statistics remained at the level of his best seasons, the Bulls lost in the semifinals to the Orlando Magic after Michael lost a crucial possession. He had recovered his level, but two years away from the NBA had changed things.

To make matters worse, Nick Anderson, the player who stole that ball, delivered a line that would become part of the legend: Michael wearing 45 wasn’t the same Michael who wore 23.

Jordan promised himself he would return to the highest level. But there was one problem: that summer, he was committed to filming Space Jam, meaning his time to train would be limited.

The Jordan Dome: The Court built for a movie

Jordan asked Warner Bros. to build a training court next to the set. What he probably didn’t expect was to find an almost complete training facility.

There was a basketball court, a gym equipped by Tim Grover, Michael’s personal trainer, who even created a training programme specifically for Bugs Bunny, although we have no idea whether Bugs actually followed it.

But it was much more than a gym. There was also a putting green, a locker room with showers, a lounge area with giant screens, and a table for card games. Everything was housed beneath a huge inflatable structure that quickly became known as the Jordan Dome.

Some of the biggest players of the era passed through. At first, several were players represented by Falk. Later came Magic Johnson, Reggie Miller, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman, among many others.

The rules were simple: five-on-five games, first to seven points, no referees. Games started at seven in the evening, after Michael finished filming for the day, and could run until around ten.

The Space Jam shoot became a kind of parallel training camp for Jordan’s comeback.

And, of course, the sneakers

Michael Jordan’s retirement had left the Air Jordan 9 in an unusual position. While he was wearing them with a modified sole during his baseball career, the silhouette was beginning to find a second life in the NBA.

Some players who might not have dared to face Michael while wearing his sneakers now started wearing them as a kind of tribute. In their original form or in customised versions, the Air Jordan 9 appeared on the feet of Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Kendall Gill, Mitch Richmond, Latrell Sprewell, Harold Miner, B.J. Armstrong, Hubert Davis, Reggie Miller and Nick Anderson, the same player who would later say that 45 wasn’t the same as 23.

During the filming of Space Jam, Michael did not wear the Air Jordan 10, the model developed during his retirement and one that never seemed to fully convince him, even after Nike modified its design by removing the toe cap. In the film, the Jordan 10s appear far from Michael’s feet, as a kind of trophy among the cups.

Jordan wears some sneakers we might not expect to see in a production of this scale, including the Nike GTS Canvas and Nike Air Max Triax. And, of course, the Air Jordan 9 appears during the training games, while the Air Jordan 11 takes centre stage during the decisive moments.

The latter became forever associated with Space Jam, thanks to its special colourway created for the film. But if we go back to the training sessions that helped lay the foundations for Jordan’s comeback, the image is different: Michael in the Air Jordan 9.

30 Years Later

The 30th anniversary of Space Jam is a reason for Jordan to celebrate. The brand is bringing back sneakers associated with the film like the Air Jordan 9 “Space Jam”, as well as others that allow us to revisit the stories surrounding the shoot.

It is also a good excuse to watch the movie again. And perhaps to discover it from a different perspective: not just as a film starring Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny, but as the product of a unique moment when basketball, cinema and advertising began to merge in a completely new way.

Air Jordan 7 “Miró”: When Barcelona became Jordan’s inspiration

Barcelona has always held a special place in Michael Jordan’s history. From the creation of the Dream Team in 1992 to one of the most sought-after special editions in Jordan Brand history, the city became a meeting point between sport, art, and culture.

Barcelona 92: The Birth of the Dream Team

For Michael Jordan, Barcelona holds a special meaning. The 1992 Olympic Games were the first to allow NBA players to participate and, although Michael had already competed in 1984 as an amateur, Barcelona marked the creation of the greatest team in basketball history: the Dream Team.

The importance of those Olympic Games was reflected even in a detail on his sneakers. For the first time, his footwear was adapted to a specific moment, replacing the usual 23 seen on his Air Jordan 7 with a 9, the number he wore while representing the United States national team.

Barcelona 92 would forever remain a special place for Jordan.

An Air Jordan 7 Inspired by Joan Miró

In 2008, Nike celebrated the Beijing Olympic Games by opening pop-up spaces in cities that had previously hosted Summer Olympics. For Barcelona, the brand prepared something special: a limited-edition Air Jordan 7 that connected the city directly with one of its most recognised artists, Joan Miró.

The painter and sculptor was not only born in Barcelona and developed much of his career there, but his work is also deeply present throughout the city through sculptures, parks, and public spaces.

The Air Jordan 7 “Miró” special edition adopted the artist’s vibrant colours, creating a palette that some also linked to the Olympic rings. Long before the era of major collaborations, this Jordan represented something completely different, far removed from what had been seen before.

The Beginning of a New Era for Jordan

Released exclusively in Barcelona, the Air Jordan 7 “Miró” became a turning point and helped open the door for future special editions. Its impact went beyond Michael Jordan himself, who had already retired permanently by then, and proved that Jordan Brand could have a new life by connecting with future generations.

Turned into a grail for collectors, its resale prices eventually became a symbol of an era and confirmed the cultural value that sneakers could achieve.

Before collaborations, before the hype, Eastpak was already there. In classrooms, at stations, on streets where contemporary urban culture was beginning to take shape. Its story is that of an object that crosses different cultures to become something universal. These nine stories explain why it remains part of the landscape.

1. It All Started with a Solution

Long before Eastpak existed, there was an intuition: observing how people move. In the 1930s, the father of Eastpak’s founder, a supermarket owner, noticed a recurring gesture: shoppers stopping when they could no longer carry more with their shopping baskets. He solved it with a new creation: the first supermarket cart. A design born from necessity. The same logic was already there: making everyday life flow better.

But there was something else. People did not understand the cart until they saw it in use. So Sylvan Goldman thought about how to introduce it: people walking through the aisles with carts, integrating them into their daily routine. Today, we would call it a brand activation or a performance. Back then, it was simply common sense. And it worked.

2. Military Precision, Civil Adoption

Eastern Canvas Products was founded in 1952 to create bags for the U.S. military. Tough materials, durable stitching, products designed to last. In the 1970s, peace brought a surplus of military supplies. Just like the M65 jacket or cargo pants, these items were adapted for civilian use and completely separated from their military origins.

Eastern Canvas Products’ bags and backpacks found a new place.

3. Eastpak Is Born

In 1976, Eastpak was born as a way of adapting these products to everyday life, introducing more padded designs created for daily use.

4. A Design That Doesn’t Need Updating

Its first major design was the Padded Pak’r, a model that does not follow fashion because it never depended on it. Its shape responds to use, and that is why, half a century later, it remains almost unchanged. In a cycle dominated by the temporary, that stability makes it something rare: a standard.

5. When Colour Comes Into Play

By the mid-1980s, colour transformed the perception of the product. The backpack stopped being neutral and became a choice. It was not only about what you carried, but how you carried it. This is where it began to connect with identity.

6. Back to the Future

Some objects, without trying, naturally fit into visions of the future. While Back to the Future imagined what was to come, with designs we still remember today, the Padded Pak’r quietly stole the spotlight with a clean, functional, and timeless aesthetic. A reminder that well-designed objects always work. Eastpak’s appearance in Back to the Future did not receive the same media attention as other designs created specifically for the film. However, its backpacks were already accessible to everyone at the time, and people are still wearing them today.

7. A Personal Archive in Motion

For generations, Eastpak has been a portable archive: notes, tapes, clothes, secrets. In environments where everything else was standardized through uniforms and codes, the backpack became a space for individuality, a place for personal identity.

8. From Tool to Language

Its adoption by graffiti artists in the 1980s and 1990s was not accidental. Durable, discreet, and capable of carrying everything needed without failing, it became part of hip-hop culture as a real tool. Through that journey, it became a symbol.

9. Movement as a Natural Extension

When Eastpak introduced wheeled luggage in the late 1990s, it expanded its universe. The same principles: durability, functionality, honest design, applied to a generation that was increasingly mobile. From school to travel, without friction.

World Cup 2026: A style recap in 6 points

Historically, a World Cup has been the perfect moment to unveil new products and showcase them on a global scale. Looking back, the first Puma King, adidas Copa Mundial, Mercurial Vapor, adidas Predator, Mizuno Morelia, and Nike Magista Obra were all launched for football’s biggest stage. Naturally, each new product came with campaigns everyone remembers: José +10, Aeropuerto 98, Au Revoir, or Secret Tournament.

With the World Cup concluded and Spain celebrating, it’s a good moment to review the style of this 2026 edition in six key trends.

Blokecore

This World Cup arrived at a unique moment. Traditionally, World Cup summers are when kits explode onto the market, refreshed specifically for the tournament. However, the 2020s brought something new to the streets: blokecore. Football design completely departed from its original function, evolving into a style we’ve seen in hundreds of workwear pieces, becoming the uniform of a new generation. For the first time, by the time the World Cup arrived, jerseys were already a trend. Football shirts stopped being mere identifiers of team loyalty and became a matter of style. This edition even saw previously overlooked goalkeeper kits join the celebration.

Retro 1994

In this tournament, hosted by three countries, the U.S. stood out. This naturally recalled the 1994 World Cup in the United States. At that time, the context was very different, with no professional league and a sport eager to enter new markets. For many current football communicators, it was their first World Cup memory. The 2026 edition evoked 1994: U.S. denim kits, Mexico goalkeeper Jorge Campos’s colorful jerseys, and oversized EQT stripes resurfaced through adidas collaborations with BAPE, Willy Chavarria, or Brain Dead.

Since 2010, Louis Vuitton has been an official World Cup collaborator, visible in the Trophy Trunk. In 2026, LV advanced further, becoming Official Supplier and Brand Licensee, enabling limited capsule collections and luxury travel accessories inspired by the tournament. Official team kit presentations are complex, requiring balance between stories, sensitivities, and design adjustments. This year, the adidas Spain away jersey made an immediate impact at its official Los Angeles unveiling, reviving the adidas trefoil, telling a story tied to literature, and offering elegant design. Rarely do presentations receive unanimous praise. The away jersey sold out in every restock and flooded the streets (even beyond official models), creating a new phenomenon for Spain. With Spain’s victory, this jersey may already be considered a legendary design.

Time will tell whether these trends are here to stay or will be forgotten among memes. Now, there are only four years left to wait for the next edition of the World Cup.

The experience unfolds like a journey. The first space recreates an airport terminal, serving both as a starting point and as a symbol of arrival. Visitors are greeted by the red blooms of the flamboyán, the tree that has become a symbol of Puerto Rico and inspired the new edition of the adidas x Bad Bunny Ballerina “Flamboyan.”

The journey continues along a street inspired by Puerto Rico, built from everyday references and neighborhood codes reminiscent of Old San Juan—the colors, the cobblestones, and the chinchorros, small bars where you can stop for a drink and play a game of dominoes.

After passing through the airport and the streets, the tour ends in a more intimate setting: a Puerto Rican home, designed as the emotional conclusion of the story.

Jordan Room Transformed into an Urban Stage

Our Jordan Room in Madrid, dedicated to the history and legacy of Jordan, was filled with music, drinks, and snacks that transported us to New York. But the real highlight was the custom Claw Arcade, inspired by classic fair machines, where attendees, with a bit of skill, could win prizes such as stickers, discount codes, a BMX helmet, and a BMX customized in the colors of the Air Jordan 4 “Brick After Brick”.

The great atmosphere, shared excitement, and interaction with the game turned the launch into a true meeting point, where each participant could test their skills, enjoy themselves, and connect with other sneaker fans. Each purchase included a personalized tote bag and a ticket to play, making each pair of sneakers also a gateway to fun and surprises.

Bad Bunny’s DTmF Tour started in Puerto Rico as a celebration of his bond with the island and the cultural universe built around DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS. After kicking off at home, the tour now arrives in Europe with stops in Paris, London, Lisbon, Warsaw, Stockholm, Madrid, and Barcelona.
