In the first two episodes of FOOTNOTES, we already found it difficult to define our guests, Frankie Pizá and Jaume Ripoll. In CAP3, we follow the journey of Julia de Castro, and it proves just as difficult.

Julia arrives at FOOTDISTRICT Madrid after putting the finishing touches to her first solo exhibition, La ausencia es la obra. The journey here is a familiar one: in Valverde, the neighbourhood where FOOTDISTRICT Madrid is located, the luthier who used to tune her violin had his workshop.

A life between disciplines

The violin and the exhibition might seem like two distant poles, but Julia de Castro’s life is full of unexpected connections. Her journey moves from classical theatre to performance, from music to cinema. During the conversation, we talk about her best-known role as an actress, but also about her other facets: historian, sound designer, cuplet singer and film director.

In this second chapter, we speak with Jaume Ripoll, editorial director of FILMIN and one of the key figures behind the recent transformation of film culture in Spain.

The episode takes place at SEGUNDO ESPACIO in Barcelona, the FOOTDISTRICT space created to develop conversations and connect different perspectives around contemporary culture.

As with the rest of the FOOTNOTES episodes, the project reclaims the idea of retail as a space for cultural exchange. Places where conversations go beyond product and help build references, context and community.

The conversations take place within FOOTDISTRICT’s own spaces—its stores in Madrid and Barcelona, SEGUNDO ESPACIO, or even our offices—understood not only as points of sale, but as environments where product coexists with culture, references and ideas.

Frankie Pizá opens FOOTNOTES

The first episode of FOOTNOTES takes place at FOOTDISTRICT Madrid and features Frankie Pizá, a figure connected to music culture whose trajectory has been defined by a critical perspective shaped from the margins.

Pizá approaches cultural criticism as a context creator. His work focuses on illuminating what surrounds the most visible cultural narratives: the dynamics that sustain them, the stories that accompany them and the structures that allow certain cultural phenomena to emerge.
